Hey, I'm Zach, one of the founders of Carbon Collective. About Carbon Collective

There's generally two reasons that people come and invest with us at Carbon Collective. One is to align your portfolio with your values. If having things like fossil fuels and private prisons in your retirement funds just doesn't feel right for you, a lot of people come for that. The other reason, and a lot of people fall in both of these camps, is that you're making fundamentally a bet about the future. By investing in our simple climate aligned portfolios, which follows our divest reinvest pressure the rest strategy. You're fundamentally making a bet that between now and the time that you retire, that we will see a decline in the demand for fossil fuels and therefore a decline in the share price of those companies and the return those companies offer, and an increase in the usage of climate solutions, things like electric cars, batteries, the expansion of plant based foods, the automation of buildings, and so much more, the expansion of the electrical grid that those industries will expand in general outperform the overall market. That is the bet from a retirement perspective that a lot of our members are making. So if you want to come make it, come learn more and get that rollover started today.

The Bonus

So here's how the bonus works. A lot of us need a little bit of an incentive or that little kick to say, this has been on your to do list. Get it done this month. So for anyone that initiates a rollover, whether it be an IRA or a 401K, that successfully finishes rolling over this month, then we will be paying a minimum of $10 per $10,000 rolled over. So that's not bad. But we want to make it even sweeter. We want to encourage kind of all of us. The more change that we make together, the better. And so as that total climbs each additional million dollars, we'll be adding a dollar up to there. And if we hit the ceiling of $15 million of total rollovers generated, we'll be bumping that up to $25 per $10,000 transferred. Not bad.

The Transfer Process

Rolling over retirement accounts could be kind of intimidating. Here's the process. If you have an IRA or an individual retirement account, it can be pretty simple. Usually we just need your account statement and we can initiate what's called an ACAT transfer, which is an electronic transfer between altruist, the institution that we use, and where your account lives. Whether that be fidelity or Schwab or Vanguard or anything like that. It generally takes about ten to 14 days for the funds to transfer. It is not a taxable event or anything like that. All the information comes with it. Things get a little bit trickier with 401 ks. With 401 ks. If you have an old 401K, you cannot transfer your current one if you're contributing to one, but if you have an old one, you can roll it into an IRA. The place to start, and we'll walk you through this, is to generally call your old 401K provider or log into the website. Sometimes they have a rollover button, which is super simple. If not, you gotta give them a call, and we'll give you all the information you need to do that. And we're always here standing by should you need any type of support. Bolovers can feel intimidating, but we're here to hold your hand throughout the whole way.

How we build our portfolios...

So how do we build our climate focused portfolios? Our goal at Carbon Collective was to take the basics of passive investing, which is invest with the overall stock market and apply a clear lens of climate change through that. And the way we did that is we ended up in our admittedly cheesy rhyme. Our stock portfolios go like this. We divest from the highest emitting industries. And so this is things like oil and gas, but also dirty utilities in some heavy industry. We then give that chair, we reinvest into the companies that are building climate solutions. And then we hold the rest. We hold the rest because these are the companies who can fully decarbonize. So we want to use our shares in concert with others to pressure them to do that faster. We then invest in a range on the bond side of green and government bonds. Overall, if you're coming to invest with carbon collective, ultimately the bet that you're making is that between now and when you retire, that fossil fuels will begin a period and enter a period of decline, leading to a decline in share value and total return. And that climate solutions will have the inverse, as things like solar and wind, and batteries and electric cars and energy efficiency take off. That the companies that generate a majority of their revenue from those type of activities will ultimately outperform in the energy transition. That choice is going to be fully up to you on what type of portfolio you think is going to be right. But if you want to align it with that theory of what's happening in climate change and what's happening in the energy transition, then rolling it over to us can make sense.

Is it safe to invest...

So this is a question we get a lot. Carbon collective is still relatively new. Yes, we serve now around 800 households. We serve around 125 businesses. But there is obviously still risk in moving and trusting an advisor that's new like us. Ultimately, what our job is is to build and manage your portfolios. We are not actually holding your funds for that. We work with a third party brokerage partner called Altruist. They work with over 3700 advisors like us and manage many tens of billions of dollars of assets on their platform. They have what's called SIPC insurance, which ensures that should anything ever happen to their custodial platform, you'll be able to get your funds back. So, overall, yes, trusting a new company like us can feel scary. But ultimately, with where things are wired up, all we're doing is once the money lands, allocating it into our portfolios.
